Water Intake is very important for both you and your baby during pregnancy. The amount of water you drink can affect the amount of amniotic fluid you make for your baby. This is a great incentive to keep up your intake of fluids. Water also aids in digestion which means it will prevent heartburn and constipation.  Make sure to limit caffeinated beverages as these cause increased urination which can lead to dehydration.

Keep in mind that non caffeinated teas, soups, etc count towards your water intake for the day. Hydration is also important for decreasing your risk of pre-term birth, so drink up!

How much water should you be drinking?

The recommended amount of fluid intake is half your body weight in ounces.

Example: If you weigh 160 pounds you should be drinking at least 80 ounces a day

What if I don’t like drinking water?

Try adding a squeeze of lemon to it and see if that helps you drink more. You can add a splash of fruit juice but be careful because you don’t want to consume too much sugar during pregnancy. Even sugars from fruit juice can contribute to increased weight gain in pregnancy. Watch the juice!

MIDWIFE TIP #1:

  • Straws: Did you know that studies have proven that we drink 30% more fluids from a straw? Buy yourself a water bottle with a straw!

MIDWIFE TIP #2:

  • Large Water Bottle: Make sure to buy yourself a large, insulated water bottle. I recommend stainless steel. Find a water bottle large enough so you only have to refill it 1-2 times a day. It is easier to keep track of how much you are drinking and will keep your water the temperature that you like. I recommend a 48-52 ounce water bottle. It’s not too large to carry around and you only have to refill 1-2 times a day.
